What is Brainspotting?
Brainspotting (BSP) is a relatively new, brain-body treatment that’s showing a lot of promise in its ability to provide relief for trauma, performance blocks, anxiety, depression, and daily stressors. This brain-based psychotherapy approach discovered by David Grand, Ph.D., psychotherapist, and former EMDR trainer. BSP works with specific eye positions (brainspots) to neurobiologically locate, focus, process, and release traumatic experiences from the brain. A “Brainspot” directly connects to the neurobiological areas of the brain where memories are stored but are often inaccessible to the conscious mind. This is one of the primary advantages of brainspotting, as it can reach parts of the brain that are not generally accessible through traditional approaches, like talk therapy. Once a Brainspot is located, the technique encourages the unconscious body/mind to open to process, release and reorganize limiting and painful beliefs, emotions and behaviors. BSP is different than EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) as the client does not need to “re-experience” the memory and risk retraumatization. Therefore, BSP can accelerate healing by not only releasing traumatic memories and limiting thought patterns, but it can also assist in cultivating and strengthening positive emotions and beliefs. This is key in developing new insights that can for perceiving past experiences from a different point of view.
